Sally’s Story

‘Having been blessed myself with a loving family and a very happy home life, I have often wondered how I could give back something to the community. After hearing how the project were looking for volunteers to mentor, I knew this would be something that I could do. I was a bit apprehensive at first but I need not have worried because the training prepares you to deal with every situation. The team are very careful to match mentors to the right families and the support throughout the time you are mentoring a family is unsurpassed. The link worker or a member of the team are always prepared to help and advise so you can download any concerns.

I think the best bits of mentoring for me has been building a rapport with the family and seeing encouraging little changes happening. Of course, it doesn’t always work out as perfectly as one would hope, but I have never left a family without the feeling they are now heading in a more positive direction. It is so rewarding to know that you may have played a part in supporting a family and the ripples from that could have such a positive effect that even future generations could benefit.
